CA Emblem (as on the printed Chemical AbstractsTM) |
The OSU Stadium |
Q: What do the CA emblem (as seen on the printed Chemical AbstractsTM and The Ohio State University (OSU) Stadium, the "Shoe", have in common?
A: Both had the same designer - Professor Thomas French.
An award-winning designer, Dr. "Tommy" French headed the OSU Department of Engineering Drawing and was a friend of E. J. Crane, an early editor of CA and first director of CAS.
Dr. French was also a "wild dreamer," advocating construction of a stadium that would hold 62,000 football fans when Ohio State football played at the 15,000-seat Ohio Field on High Street in Columbus, Ohio. He was a major fundraiser for the "Shoe," which opened on October 21, 1922 for the OSU-Michigan game. Who won? Ohio State, of course.
