Orange papery balloon-like pods or calyx are the defining feature of Physalis alkekengi, a herbaceous perennial. It is appropriately named the Chinese lantern plant because of the calyxs uncanny resemblance to miniature Chinese paper lanterns. It is a leafy plant with different varieties that can reach up to four feet tall. Bearing white flowers in the spring, the plant transforms into an abundance of vibrant orange calyx as it matures throughout the season. The calyx protects the plants fruit, which are edible red-colored berries. Commonly valued for its uniqueness in gardens or floral arrangements, the Chinese lantern plant has also been cultivated for centuries for its medicinal qualities. Containing high amounts of carotenoids, such as zeaxanthin and lutein, and steroids, such as physalin, plant extracts have been used in the treatment of inflammation and various diseases such as diabetes mellitus and arrhythmia.

The title method comprises (1) washing fruits, rhizome and/or persistent calyx of Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii, pulverizing, and extracting with ethanol or water; (2) filtering to collect the extractive solution, and purifying by sequentially passing through chitin and macroporous adsorption resin column; (3) eluting with 50-90% ethanol to collect the eluate, and concentrating to obtain fluid extract or powdered extract; and (4) dissolving in 60-90% ethanol, filtering to obtain filtrate, and drying under reduced pressure. The invention further provides three Chinese medicinal compns., which resp. comprises steroids of Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii 65-75, matrine 15-25, and Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei 5-15%; steroids of Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii 45-55, matrine 25-35, and berberine 15-25%; and steroids of Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii 55-65, matrine 30-40, and Moschus 1-10%. The inventive method is simple and the purity of steroids of Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii is up to 50% or above. The above three Chinese medicinal compns. can be used for treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, such as arrhythmia and myocardial ischemia, with high effective rates of 85%, and 90% and 85%, resp. 145: 33911 Anti-inflammatory composition comprising Physalis alkekengi extract.
