Multiple Search Concepts

Introduction

A search term for each important concept in a search question is placed in a separate row of the Word Entry Boxes.

Search Term

A search term is any term or phrase that is searched in a CA on CD database to retrieve records that contain the term.

Types of Search Terms

Search terms:

  • are words, numbers, or alphanumerics
  • can be single words or phrases (depending on the index they are in)
  • may incorporate Wild Cards

Example

Consider the following search question:

Find references to papers on the role of tamoxifen (CAS Registry Number = 10540-29-1] in the treatment of breast cancer in women.

Concepts

Search Terms

Tamoxifen

CAS RN = 10540-29-1

Note: Use a CAS RN as a search term rather than a substance name for the most reliable retrieval of substance information

Breast cancer

Breast cancer(s)

Women

Women, woman, or female(s)

Note: Include synonyms

Note

The number of concepts used in a search affects the precision of answers in the search results:

  • Using more concepts makes the search more precise
  • Using fewer concepts makes the search more comprehensive
