Finding Patents

Introduction

Use CA on CD's Index Browse to locate references to patents.

When to Use

Use this strategy when you know a patent number or application number and you want to

  • Find the patent
  • Find an English language equivalent for the patent
  • Identify additional countries which have granted protection for an invention

Example

Find the United States patent with the number US 97-918420.

Preview

Using Index Browse is a 2 part process:

  1. Locate the patent number from an alphanumeric list in the Patent Number Index of a CA on CD database
  2. Search the number to retrieve a reference to the patent

How to

1. From the tool bar, click Browse button

2. Click the arrow in the Index pull-down menu. Select Patent No.

3. Type the patent number in the Find entry box

As you type, the list scrolls to display a portion of the Patent Number Index around the number of interest.

4. Select the patent number of interest.

5. Click on the Search button, , in the upper-right corner of the Index window.

 

The Record window appears.

6. From the Record window you can do the following:
