Finding Papers Using Multiple Search Words

Introduction

Use CA on CD's Word Search feature to retrieve references to papers using multiple search words.

Word Search Features

Word Search can be used to create powerful search strategies.

Options are available to:

  • Enter multiple search concepts
  • Target words or phrases to specific search fields
  • Use Boolean operators to define how terms are combined in the search process
  • Use Wild Cards to retrieve word variations
  • Set word proximity relationships

Example

Find references to papers on the role of tamoxifen [CAS Registry Number = 10540-29-1] in the treatment of breast cancer in women.

How to

1. From the tool bar, click Search button.

The Word Search window is displayed.

2. Enter a term for one of the concepts in your search in a Word Entry Box:

  • Paste a term from an Index Browse window.
  • Type a term. Use Wild Cards in the term, if appropriate.

3. Click the arrow in the Search Field drop-down list.  Select a search field.

4. (Optional) Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until a search term for each important concept in your search has been entered in a Word Entry Box and a corresponding Search Field has been selected.
 
5. If the search has more than one concept (and thus requires more than one Word Entry Box), select a Boolean operator to combine concepts.

Click the arrow in the box with "and" to display a drop-down list of Boolean operators.Select an operator.

6. (Optional) Under Word Relationship, click a radio button to specify the proximity of terms in different Word Entry Boxes, within an answer.

Note: Word Relationship options apply only to terms in WORD Search Field.

7. Click Search

8. The Search Results window appears.

Note: If there is only one document title, this window is by-passed. Instead, the document record is displayed.

From the Search Results window

  • Titles may be printed
  • Titles may be saved to disk
  • A document order form may be printed
  • A full record may be displayed

Double click a title to display the full record.

9. The Record window appears.

  • Records may be printed
  • Records may be saved to disk
  • A document order form may be printed
  • Other records may be displayed

Close the Record window to reveal the Search Results window behind it:

  1. Hold down the Ctrl key
  2. Strike the F4 key

Note: If more than one record has been displayed, repeat Steps 1 and 2 to close each Record window.

 

Alert!

Do not limit a patent search by language on a CD prior to 1998.

Before the 1998 CD, patents did not have a language search field. Limiting a search by language on these CDs will result in zero patent answers.
