CAS is committed to serving the research and teaching needs of universities and colleges. We recognize the critical value of education and university-based research to the future of chemistry and the advancement of science.
CAS offers the following key products and services for the academic community.
SciFinder ScholarTM
SciFinder Scholar is a research discovery tool that allows college students and faculty to access a wide diversity of research from many scientific disciplines, including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, material science, agricultural science, and more!
STN®
STN is the premier online scientific and technical information service dedicated to meeting the needs of information professionals worldwide. For more than 25 years, searchers in commercial, government, and academic settings have used STN to access high-quality sci-tech databases.
STN offers a variety of search interfaces, including STN Express®, STN® on the WebSM, and STN Easy®, and provides two programs to help students learn the fundamentals of online searching with STN:
- CAS Academic Programs for STN - affordable access to STN databases for faculty, staff, and students in chemistry or related sciences
-
STN is operated jointly by CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe worldwide and is represented in Japan by JAICI.
Chemical AbstractsTM
Chemical Abstracts (CA), available in print and microform, alerts its subscribers to the most recent published breakthroughs in science. An annual subscription to CA provides you with more than 865,000 references to the published literature each year. By defining chemistry as broadly as possible, CA has always included the chemical aspects of a wide variety of scientific disciplines.
The following programs provide CA at discounted academic rates:
- Printed CA - offered to qualifying academic subscribers at a special academic rate
- CAS Small College Program for CA subscriptions - offered to smaller institutions in the U.S. and Canada that offer only undergraduate degrees in chemical and related disciplines
- OCLC FirstSearch CA Student Edition - designed for undergraduate chemistry students to become familiar with the chemical literature
ACS Accreditation
The following statements appear under the heading Library Guidelines for ACS Approved Schools on the ACS Committee for Professional Training web site:
"Essential to an approved chemistry program is a good library where faculty and students have access to books and periodicals and where adequate support for database searching is available. Chemical Abstracts (hardcopy or online) must be a part of the collection, and access must be to full abstracts not merely titles."
