SciFinder 2006 System Requirements

Windows

  • Computer: PC with at least a Pentium-class or equivalent processor. Explore by Sequence requires at least a 200 MHz processor.
    • Microsoft® Windows® 98, Me, 2000, XP, or NT 4.0
    • Minimum of 32 MB (RAM) memory for Windows 98, Me, or NT 4.0, 64 MB or higher recommended. Minimum of 64 MB memory for Windows 2000 or XP, 128 MB (RAM) or higher recommended for XP. Large Panorama analyses may require 64 MB. Explore by Sequence requires a minimum of 128 MB for all Windows operating systems, 256 MB or higher recommended.
    • Minimum of 140 MB of available hard disk space (not including pagefile memory), 160 MB recommended (minimum 250 MB needed for installation). For the SciFinder Toolbar, an additional 25 MB of available disk space is needed (75 MB needed for installation). (This assumes Microsoft .NET software is already installed.)
  • Connection: TCP/IP network-level connection to CAS via the Internet, Z39.50 application-level connection to CAS through port 210

Accessing full text via ChemPort® and online Help files on the CAS server requires an HTTP application-level connection through port 80.

Explore by Sequence requires an HTTPS application-level connection through port 443.

  • Monitor: SVGA color monitor; minimum 800x600 screen resolution, 1024x768 or higher recommended; minimum of 256 colors
  • Printer: High-quality graphics printer, e.g., laser or inkjet, recommended

Additional Software

  • Web Browser: Microsoft® Internet Explorer (MSIE), version 4 or higher, Netscape®, version 4 or higher, or Mozilla Firefox, version 1.0. A web browser is needed to access full text via ChemPort, online Help, and Internet resources within the Tools menu, and to print Explore by Sequence results.
    • Plug-ins must be installed in the Netscape and Firefox plug-ins and components folders for some features in ChemPort, e.g., Reference Linking. The plug-ins are installed automatically during the SciFinder 2006 installation.
    • Java and JavaScript must be enabled for online Help and some features within ChemPort.
    • ActiveX must be enabled in MSIE for ChemPort Reference Linking.
    • Cookies must be accepted for some features in ChemPort.
  • Adobe® Reader®: Version 4.0 or higher. Adobe Reader is needed to display PDF documents available via the CAS web site and ChemPort.  The Reader can be downloaded at www.adobe.com.
  • Microsoft® Excel and panorama.xla Add-In File: Excel 97, 2000, 2002, or 2003. Excel, in conjunction with panorama.xla, is needed for the Panorama feature. The panorama.xla add-in file is installed automatically during SciFinder installation.
  • Discovery Studio ViewerPro or ViewerLite: Windows version 3.5 or higher. Discovery Studio Viewer products from Accelrys are visualization tools that allow you to view 3D molecular models for structure results.
    • DS ViewerPro may be obtained from Accelrys
    • ViewerLite is no longer supported by Accelrys but may be obtained free of charge from CAS at my.cas.org. ViewerLite is provided "AS IS", without warranties of any kind.

After installation of ViewerPro or ViewerLite, run the program once to ensure that it creates Windows Registry entries that will be used by SciFinder to display 3D models.  

Mac OS X

  • Computer: An Apple® Macintosh® with an Intel x86 or Power PC G4 or G5 processor
  • Operating System: Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
  • Available Hard Disk Space: 40-50 MB
  • Connection: TCP/IP connection to CAS via the Internet; Z39.50 application-level connection to CAS through port 210

Accessing full text via ChemPort® and online Help files on the CAS server requires an HTTP application-level connection via Port 80

  • Monitor: 13" or larger, color monitor capable of displaying 256 colors with 1024x768 screen resolution
  • Printer: High-quality graphics printer, e.g., laser or inkjet

Additional Software

  • Web Browser: Safari® (OS X default), or a Mac OS X compatible version of Netscape®, Mozilla FirefoxTM, or Microsoft® Internet Explorer (MSIE)

A web browser is needed to access full text, online Help, and other Internet resources within the Tools menu.

      • Java and JavaScript must be enabled.
      • Cookies must be accepted for some features in ChemPort.
