Accessing previous versions of STN AnaVist

  • As a new STN AnaVist user, can I get software for STN AnaVist, Version 1.1?

No.  Only Version 2.0 software is available to new users.

  • As a current STN AnaVist user, can I get Version 1.1 software?

Version 1.1 is no longer available for downloading from the CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe web sites.  For certain needs, Version 1.1 software will be available through CAS Customer Care until at least April 2008.  An announcement will be made well in advance of the discontinuation of support for previous versions of STN AnaVist.

Installing STN AnaVist, Version 2.0

  • With which operating systems can I use STN AnaVist, Version 2.0?

Version 2.0 is compatible with Microsoft Windows operating systems, including Windows VistaTM (Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate), Windows XP (SP1 or SP2), and Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher).  However, administrative privileges are required for installation.  Contact your local IT department if you have problems installing Version 2.0.  For additional information, visit STN AnaVist System Requirements.

  • Are there any differences in Version 2.0 installation compared to previous versions?

Yes.  Version 2.0 automatically optimizes performance on computers with 1 GB or higher RAM.

  • Does Version 2.0 install over my current version (1.0, 1.01, or 1.1)?

No. 

  • After installing Version 2.0, when can I remove Version 1 from my computer?

See the table below:

No.  However, with the addition of DWPI content, several software enhancements were necessary to fully utilize the new data.

Using STN Express with STN AnaVist, Version 2.0

  • Can I use STN AnaVist, Version 2.0, without STN Express?

No.  Creation of document sets for Version 2.0 requires use of the Save for STN AnaVist wizard available in STN Express, Version 8.2 or higher.  As with previous versions of STN AnaVist, holders of STN Login IDs for Shared Projects do not require STN Express to use STN AnaVist.

  • Do I need to accept the latest discover.fil update in STN Express, Version 8.2?

Yes.  The discover.fil update issued on September 6, 2007 allows for full support of STN AnaVist, Version 2.0.  If the update is not installed, certain features in STN AnaVist, Version 2.0, may not work.

  • Can I create document sets for previous versions of STN AnaVist with STN Express?

Yes.  The Save for STN AnaVist wizard in STN Express, Version 8.2 or higher, includes an option to save for STN AnaVist 1.0 through 1.1.  However, documents from WPIDS/WPINDEX/WPIX will not be included in the saved document set.

  • What is the new Display from STN AnaVist wizard in STN Express?

Documents saved in STN AnaVist, Version 2.0, can be displayed in STN Express, Version 8.2 or higher, using the Display from STN AnaVist wizard.  This feature provides additional document display and post-processing options for documents saved in Version 2.0.

  • What is the new Create L# from STN AnaVist wizard in STN Express?

A fully-functional L-number can be created in STN Express, Version 8.3, from an answer set saved in STN AnaVist, Version 2.0. In addition to searching, the L-number can be used to:

  • Display answers from STN AnaVist in any format
  • Move full-text patent documents from STN AnaVist to STN Viewer via the Evaluate with STN Viewer wizard

Using other STN or CAS products with STN AnaVist, Version 2.0

  • Can I export full-text patent documents from Version 2.0 to display in STN ViewerTM?

No.

  • Can I create document sets in STN Easy or STN on the WebSM for Version 2.0?

No.  All document sets must be created in STN Express, Version 8.2 or higher.

  • Can I import document sets from SciFinder into STN AnaVist, Version 2.0?

Not at this time.

Re-visualizing document sets from previous versions of STN AnaVist

  • How can I re-visualize document sets created for previous versions in STN AnaVist, Version 2.0?

Document sets may be re-visualized in Version 2.0 after converting .rkx files to the .xta file format:

    1. In STN Express, select File > Convert STN AnaVist .rkx file.
    2. Locate the .rkx file to convert, and click Open.
    3. When the Select STN AnaVist File window appears, click Save.  A message will indicate when the .xta file has been saved.
    4. Open STN AnaVist, Version 2.0 and click Import.
    5. Locate the new .xta file, and click Open.
    6. Click Visualize 
  • Will I be charged for re-visualizing Version 1 document sets in Version 2.0?

Yes.  However, credit is available on request for any visualization fees incurred when re-visualizing Version 1 document sets in Version 2.0.  Re-visualization credits are available through December 31, 2007.

  • Where are .rkx files stored by default?

The default directory for STN Express is C:\CASNC\STN Express\Trnscrpt. 

  • If I deleted my .rkx files, how can I re-create a visualization from Version 1 in Version 2.0?

The original search must be conducted again in STN Express.  Then use the Save for STN AnaVist wizard to create an .xta file for Version 2.0.  Visualization projects based on document sets created using the concept query tool in Version 1 cannot be re-created in Version 2.0.

  • When I convert an .rkx file, is the resulting .xta file updated with any new documents or indexing?

No.  The .rkx file is static and includes only the Accession Numbers (AN) of the answers saved on the day the file was created.

  • Can I transfer any visualization customizations from Version 1 to Version 2.0?

No.  STN AnaVist customizations are not saved in document set files (.rkx or .xta).  Customization made in Version 1 must be re-applied in Version 2.0, including:

      • Group term re-clustering
      • Term editing
      • Additional nondefault charts
      • Subset visualizations

  • Can I create a document set for Version 2.0 in CASREACT, MARPAT, the CA family of databases, and/or the CASLINK cluster?

Yes.  Conduct a search in one or more of these databases or the CASLINK cluster and then search the L-number in CAplus.  Use the Save for STN AnaVist wizard with the resulting L-number created in CAplus.  For example:

  • Why do I get an error message in STN Express when I use the Save for STN AnaVist wizard with more than 20,000 records?

Previous versions of STN AnaVist included a filtering feature capable of reducing the number of imported documents to 20,000 or less.  Version 2.0 does not include this feature.  Document sets must be reduced to fewer than 20,000 documents in STN Express prior to using the Save for STN AnaVist wizard.

  • Can I import data from Derwent World Patents Index First ViewSM (WPIFV) into Version 2.0?

No.

Using the Download CAplus Documents feature

  • Are there any changes to the Download CAplus Documents feature in STN AnaVist, Version 2.0?

Yes.  The feature has been streamlined, but still provides complete sets of CAplus records in .csv file format for use in third-party analysis and visualization tools.  The fee per document has not changed from previous versions.

Identifying the source of U.S. patent documents

  • Why is USPAT2 indicated as a source database for U.S. patent documents in STN AnaVist, Version 2.0, when in previous versions, only USPATFULL was indicated as the source?

Previous versions of STN AnaVist do not indicate USPAT2 as a source database because USPATFULL and USPAT2 were combined into a single database.

Creating visualization projects

  • What is custom visualization?

In previous versions of STN AnaVist, visualizations were created by using only Title and Abstract fields for clustering in the Research Landscape.  Version 2.0 allows for additional data fields to be used for clustering, including Claims (Exemplary/First Claim and All Claims), Technology Indicators, and International Patent Classification (IPC) Codes.  Visualizations may also be created using combinations of text fields.

  • Can I combine IPC codes with one or more of the text fields when customizing visualization? 

No.  Research Landscapes created with IPC codes include IPC codes only.

  • Can I adjust the Concept Frequency when creating Research Landscape based on IPC codes?

No.  Concept Frequency is always set to 100% and cannot be altered.

  • Will I be charged another visualization fee if I visualize again based on a different set of data fields?

Yes.

  • When selecting data fields for clustering, what is a Backup field?

If a document does not include data in the selected clustering field, the Backup field is used for clustering instead.  For example, including a backup field is important when clustering on Claims alone in a document set that includes patent and nonpatent documents.

  • Why do clustering options sometimes change?

Available clustering options are based on the source databases of the imported documents.  For example, the option to cluster using Technology Indicators is available only when documents from CAplus, USPATFULL, and USPAT2 are source databases.  Technology Indicators are CAS indexing terms that are only available in documents from CAplus, and in chemistry-relevant USPATFULL and USPAT2 documents that have been enhanced with this indexing.

  • Does a custom visualization with Technology Indicators include indexing terms from WPINDEX?

No.  Technology Indicators are CAS indexing terms that are only available in documents from CAplus, and in chemistry-relevant USPATFULL and USPAT2 documents that have been enhanced with indexing.

  • Is there an additional fee to create a visualization project that includes WPINDEX content?

No.  The price to create a visualization project in Version 2.0 is determined by the total number of records included in the project, regardless of database content.

Displaying documents

  • What information is included in documents displayed in STN AnaVist, Version 2.0?

Documents are displayed in a condensed format that provides bibliographic data and the abstract, if available.  The format also includes the data available to create bar and matrix charts.

  • Are there any additional document display options?

Yes.  A minimum of three additional display options per database are available in STN Express via the new Display from STN AnaVist wizard.

  • Why are documents displayed from STN AnaVist in STN Express not reflected in the STN AnaVist session summary?

Documents displayed using the Display from STN AnaVist wizard are reflected in the STN Express expenditures and do not appear in the STN AnaVist session summary.

  • If I display a document in STN AnaVist, will I be charged to display it again if I use the Display from STN AnaVist wizard?

Yes.  STN Express does not account for previous displays in STN AnaVist. 

  • As a subscriber to WPIDS/WPIX, can I display WPIDS/WPIX documents in Version 2.0?

No.  The source database for displayed DWPISM documents is WPINDEX.  To display documents in WPIDS or WPIX formats, use the Display from STN AnaVist wizard in STN Express.

  • Can I display both invention- and member-level documents from WPINDEX in Version 2.0?

No.  To display member-level documents, use the Display from STN AnaVist wizard in STN Express.

Using the Research Landscape, bar charts, and matrix charts

  • What can I do when highlighting colors in the Research Landscape do not show up well against the background?

Chart Colors may be changed in the Visualization Workspace menu available in Tools > Preferences.  Alternately, increase the contrast between highlighting colors and the background by clicking the Select Landscape View icon in the Research Landscape window and choosing Select 2D View (Light) for a white background, or Select 2D View (Dark) for a black background.

  • Why is there a distant peak in the corner of my Research Landscape?

STN AnaVist creates Research Landscapes based on data available in the user-defined or default clustering fields.  Documents that do not have data in any of the clustering fields (including the Backup field) are identified as different from the other documents and are placed in a peak away from the others.  This peak may also include documents with clustering field data that is truly unique compared to the other documents.

  • Can I identify cells within a matrix chart that are applicable to more than one highlighting group?

Yes.  With the multiple-color highlighting feature in Version 2.0, certain cells within a matrix chart may be associated with more than one highlighting group.  Such cells appear with black triangles in each corner of the cell.  Hovering over the cell provides additional information.

  • Why do I get a message that there was not enough system memory to create a matrix chart?

Certain matrix charts may require a significant amount of system memory.  Try one or more of these solutions to avoid the system memory error:

      • Reduce the number of highlighting colors used at one time.
      • Reduce the number of rows and columns in the matrix by modifying Chart Properties.  To do this, right-click the chart and select Properties.  Under the View tab, reduce the number of rows and columns to include in the matrix chart.  Default matrix chart settings may be modified in the Charts menu available in Tools > Preferences.  (A default setting of 50 cells on each axis is optimal for performance.)
      • Create two bar charts for a similar result.  A matrix chart displays the number of documents where terms co-occur.  Co-occurring terms can also be displayed using bar charts with the highlighting feature.  When a term is highlighted in one bar chart, co-occurring terms are highlighted in the other bar chart.  By selecting Sort Descending by Highlighted Count, the co-occurring terms will automatically sort to the top each time you highlight another term.  You may set a higher number of bars on a bar chart than rows or columns on a matrix chart without system memory issues.
  • Can I identify records within a bar that are applicable to more than one highlighting group?

Yes.  With the multiple-color highlighting feature in Version 2.0, any documents belonging to more than one highlighting group are grouped together in a single gray segment of the bar.  The documents represented by this segment are members of multiple highlighting groups, but not necessarily the same highlighting groups.

  • Are there any differences in the display of bar charts in Versions 1 and 2.0?

Yes.  In Version 2.0, labels display directly on the bar, preventing truncation of the label in most cases.  In addition, bar charts in Version 2.0 can display significantly more bars than in previous versions.

Changing preferences

  • Are there any differences in the Preferences between Versions 1 and 2.0?

Yes.  The new Messages menu includes settings for alert messages and cost notifications.  For optimal performance, verify current preferences on first use of Version 2.0.

  • Are there any preference settings that should not be customized?

Yes.  To ensure good performance, keep the setting for new Matrix Charts at its default setting of 50 rows and columns.  To see more data a matrix chart, right-click the chart and select Properties.  Under the View tab, modify the number of rows and columns to include in the matrix chart.

Sharing projects

  • Can I share projects across service centers with STN AnaVist, Version 2.0?

Not at this time.

  • Can I share a project created in Version 2.0 with someone who has a previous version of STN AnaVist (and vice versa)?

No.  The same version of STN AnaVist must be used by both the project originator and the project recipient.
