Connecting to STN with STN Express 7.0 and Windows Dial-Up Networking

STN Express 7.0 for Windows can be configured to access STN via the Internet when you use Windows Dial-Up Networking (DUN) to connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or your company or campus network.  Creating a logon setup is easy using the STN Setup Wizard.

Assumptions

  1. You already have a DUN configuration for an ISP.
  2. You have an STN account with STN Columbus and a loginid.  (The steps for setting up a connection to other STN Service Centers are very similar, but this example uses STN Columbus.)

Creating Your Setup

First, launch STN Express so that the Main Menu & Toolbar appear on your desktop.

Step A

Setup

  1. Click the Setup menu...
  2. ... and select STN Setup Wizard.

Step B

Choose Service Center

  1. Read the important information behind the Before I Begin button.  You'll learn what facts you need to know to complete your new logon setup.
  2. Choose your STN Service Center.  The default is STN Columbus.
  3. The default Logon Port of X is correct for commercial accounts.  For accounts in the STN Columbus academic program, select the STN port letter for your (North American) time zone:

    Time Zone
    STN Port Letter
    Eastern
    I
    Central
    C
    Mountain
    M
    Pacific
    Z

  4. This step is complete.  Click Next.

Step C

Choose connection

  1. Select the third radio button (I want to setup a connection to STN using Dial-UP Networking (PPP)).
  2. Click Next.

Step D

Gateway?
  1. STN Express detects all of your DUN configurations and displays one.
  2. If the DUN configuration of your choice is not displayed, select it from the pop-up list.
  3. Click Next..

Step F

Finish setup
  1. Enter a Setup Name.  Choose something that will help you identify this setup from others that you may create.
  2. You may type your STN login ID and STN Password, however, they are optional.  If, for security or other reasons, you choose not to store this information in your logon setup, you will be prompted for each when you log on.
  3. Click Finish to exit the STN Setup Wizard.

What if the new setup doesn't make the connection?

  • Make sure your Dial-Up Networking setup works.  Can you use it to browse the Web or to send and receive email?
  • Modify your logon setup to use the IP address 134.243.5.32 instead of the host name stnc.cas.org.  Sometimes the connection to STN can be made by address even when not by name.
  • Check with your ISP to make sure you have telnet access through port 23.
  • See other Internet connection tips on at STN Express Technical Support.

If you have any questions about using STN Express to connect to STN, please contact CAS Customer Care.
