STN Express 7.0 for Windows can be configured to connect to STN over the Internet. In many cases, this can easily be accomplished with a standard Winsock logon setup. In some cases, however, a gateway exists between you and the Internet. Use the following technique when your Windows PC must connect to a WinGate brand gateway or proxy server before making a telnet connection to the Internet. (If your gateway is not WinGate, follow these instructions.) For example, to connect to STN, you might first have to connect to the WinGate gateway named gatehost and from there connect to STN, as shown in this example:
User Id: abc Password: ****** WinGate> stnc.cas.org
Connecting to host stnc.cas.org...Connected

Assumptions and Preparation
- You have an account and loginid for STN-Columbus. Logon setups for other STN Service Centers are very similar, but this example uses STN-C.
- Your PC has a live network connection that lets it communicate with the WinGate proxy server using the telnet protocol.
-
Before setting-up STN Express to connect through a WinGate gateway, you will need to know a few details about the gateway. These details will depend on your particular gateway and are controlled by your organization. In this example, the details are found in the transcript shown above. You will need to know:
- The name or address of the gateway computer (gatehost).
- How to log on to the gateway. You may need to know:
- How the gateway asks for your logonid, if a loginid is needed (User Id:).
- Your logonid, if needed (ABC).
- How the gateway asks for your password, if a password is needed (Password:).
- Your password, if needed (not shown).
- How the gateway asks for your telnet destination (WinGate>).
If you need help obtaining information about your WinGate gateway, contact your organization's IT department or help line.
Creating your setup
First, launch STN Express so that the Main Menu & Toolbar appear on your desktop.
Step A
- Click the Setup icon.
- If you are asked if you want to use the Setup Wizard, click No.
Step B: Start a new logon setup
- If this is the first setup, then you will see no entries in the Setup Names box. On the other hand, if this is not your first setup, you will see the names of all your logon setups.
- Click New.
Step C: Complete the basic logon setup
- Enter a Setup Name. Choose something that will help you identify this setup from others that you may create.
- You may type your STN loginid and password, however, these are optional. If you choose not to save them in the logon setup for security reasons, you will be prompted for each when you log on.
- Drop down the Connect via list by clicking on its down arrow. Select Winsock (Internet).
- Type the name or IP address of your gateway computer in the Host Name or IP address box.
- Select Custom under Logon Method.
- Click the Configure... button to open the Custom Logon dialog.
Step D: Choose a WinGate gateway
- Select Standard under Scripts Folder.
- Scroll down the list and highlight wingate proxy.sc.
- Click the Copy >> button.
- You should now see two scripts in the Selected script list list - wingate proxy.sc and **STNLOGON.
- Click OK.
Step E
- The custom logon scripts are listed.
- Click the Advanced button.
Step F: Tell STN Express the details about your gateway

Much of the information that's needed to complete this step is found in the login example shown above.
Prompt Character strings area
- If your gateway prompts for your loginid, type the exact prompt characters in the Login: box.
- If your gateway prompts for your password, type the actual password prompt in the Password: box.
- If your WinGate proxy server prompts you for a command, type the command prompt in the Command: box.
Optional area
- If a loginid is required to connect to your gateway, type it in the Gateway Login ID: box. This is optional. If you do not save your gateway loginid in your setup, STN Express will ask for it each time you connect to STN.
- If a password is required, type it in the Password: box. The password is optional. If you save it in your logon setup, it will be encrypted. If you don't save it, STN Express will ask for it each time you connect to STN.
Execute at command prompt area
- Type stnc.cas.org in the topmost Execute at command prompt box. 134.243.5.32 is the IP address that is equivalent to the hostname stnc.cas.org.
- Click OK to close the Advanced dialog.
Step G

If you have a loginid in the CAS academic program, click the Host Settings tab and follow these instructions to change the STN port letter. Then use your web browser's Back button to return here.
- Click OK to close the dialog box. If you entered your STN password, you'll be asked to reenter it.
Step H
- The name of the new logon setup appears in the list.
- Click the Save button.
- The setup is done. Click the OK button.
What if the new setup doesn't make the connection?
- Do you see any error messages from your PC, from the gateway, or from STN that point to a problem?
- Can you connect to the gateway computer? If not, then the problem is likely in your PC, the gateway, or the network between them. Verify the name of the gateway computer in your STN Express setup. Try to connect to the gateway without using STN Express. For example, go to Start -> Run and type telnet gatehost in the Open box.
- Does the gateway computer connect to STN? If not, try using STN-C's IP address (134.243.5.32) in Step F instead of the host name (stnc.cas.org). If the gateway still does not connect, something is possibly wrong with the gateway.
