How do I retain my STN Express 8.0 files and settings when moving to a new PC?

If you've been using STN Express for awhile, you don't want to lose your logon setups, queries, or transcripts when you get a new computer.  Here's what to do.

Step A: Save Important Information

Save important STN Express information on floppy disks, on your network, or some other place from which it can be transferred to the new computer.

  1. Make a note of your STN Express installation folder.  The two most common locations are C:\Stnexp and C:\Program Files\Stnexp.  You'll need this path in Step B.
  2. Configuration (.ini) files

STN Express configuration files are stored in your Windows operating system folder.  Depending on which version of the Windows operating system you have, your Windows folder might be C:\Windows, C:\Winnt, or something else.  The most important configuration file is EXPRESS.INI because it contains logon setups and General Preferences.  Also, each STN Express application has its own configuration file that contains application-specific preferences:

    • STNACCNT.INI - STN Accounting preferences
    • STNEDIT.INI - STN Edit preferences
    • STNOCC.INI - WPI Other Code Concepts preferences
    • STNPSI.INI - STN Structure Drawing preferences
    • STNSETUP.INI - STN Setup preferences
    • STNTERM.INI - STN Online and Results preferences

All six of the preceding files are regenerated if they are not present when they are needed, so there is no requirement to transfer them to the new computer.  However, STNTERM.INI and STNPSI.INI may contain preferences that are important to you.

Save EXPRESS.INI.  It cannot be regenerated automatically.  Save other .ini files as desired.

  3. Queries, transcripts, and postprocessing information

By default, structure queries (.str files) are saved in the Queries folder inside the STN Express installation folder, C:\Stnexp\Queries, for example.  Transcripts are stored in the Trnscrpt folder inside the STN Express installation folder.  Accounting data, Analyze Plus grouping information, and other data are stored in the Uscripts folder.

Save the Queries, Trnscrpt, and Uscripts folders and their contents for transfer to the new computer.  If these folders have been relocated from the STN Express installation folder and their paths are in General Preferences, note their locations for use in Step B.  If these folders are on a network drive or server and the path to them will be the same on the new computer as on the old PC, there is no need to save them because they aren't going anywhere.

For more information about STN Express files and folders, see the Installation chapter of your STN Express User Guide.  The User Guide is a PDF file that is usually installed with STN Express

Step B: Transfer Important Information

  1. Copy your saved EXPRESS.INI into the Windows folder of the new computer.  If Windows says EXPRESS.INI is already there and asks if you want to replace it, click Yes.  If you saved any of the other STN Express configuration files, copy them, too.
  2. Create the STN Express installation folder, using the path noted in step A1, on the new computer.
  3. If the Queries, Trnscrpt, and Uscripts folders were in their default locations on the old PC in the STN Express installation folder, copy them into the STN Express installation folder on the new computer.  Otherwise, copy folders or contents to the locations noted in step A3.

Step C: Install STN Express

  1. Install STN Express on the new computer.  The installer reads EXPRESS.INI and will install the software into the same folder on the new computer as the old computer.
  2. Launch STN Express, and you'll find your logon setups, queries, and transcripts in their familiar places.
