Database News for February 2009
IndexThree million new patent records blast AEROSPACE into STN patent clustersThe Aerospace and High Technology Database (AEROSPACE), produced by ProQuest, incorporated 3 million new U.S. and Canadian patent records during 2008. With this large infusion of new data, the content of AEROSPACE is now more than 50% patent records, qualifying the database to be added to the STN database clusters PATENTS and HPATENTS. For more information about AEROSPACE, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheet. New patent-examiner citations in 300,000 CA/CAplus patent records provide insights into related prior artPatent references cited by patent examiners have been added to nearly 300,000 CA/CAplus patent records from 1982-2008. These new citations can indicate related prior art that may be of interest in relation to patent infringement and licensing opportunities. The CA/CAplus patent records represent patent documents from United States, French, and German patent offices and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and European Patent Office (EPO), with a majority from the U.S. patent office and WIPO. Only records that did not previously include cited reference information have been supplemented. The new citations include patent country, number, and kind code information and are available in the Cited References (RE) field. For citations from 1979-2008, links to the corresponding CAplus record are provided. Patent records supplemented with new citations will not be included in current-awareness alerts (SDIs). For additional information about CA/CAplus, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets. |

- New display fields provide more specific display, select, and sort capabilities:
|
|
- Implied (S) proximity has been installed in the classification code (/CC), corporate source (/CS), meeting organizer (/MO), and supplementary term (/ST) search fields.
- Simultaneous left and right truncation (SLART) is now available in the Basic Index (/BI), Abstract (/AB), and Title (/TI) search fields.
- Author names and affiliated organizations are now indexed and displayed in the /CS search field.
- The new predefined format ALLO displays the data in the old version of the ALL format. Display ALL now shows the STN standard display.
- The Abstract (/AB) search field has been added. Abstract words continue to be searchable in the /BI field. Left truncation is available in both /AB and/BI.
Some enhancements may affect your current-awareness alert (SDI) profiles. Please review your saved strategies and make adjustments, if needed. Note that, for automatic or manual update searching, the /ED (Entry Date) and /UP (Update Date) fields are now available. Use /ED to search on all new records in an update and /UP to search all new and revised records.
Due to changed accession numbers, answer sets saved from the old database are no longer valid. However, queries associated with those answer sets can still be run if the answer sets are needed in the reloaded database.
For additional information about COMPENDEX, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheet.
MEDLINE reloaded and enhanced with more precise author group fields
MEDLINE, provided by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), and the LMEDLINE learning database have been reloaded on STN. The annual reload uses the 2009 edition of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).
Instead of offering a single field for all Author names (/AU), MEDLINE records now designate four author fields to improve your retrieval precision and speed:
- (/AU) - Author names
- (/AUGR) - Group Author names (corporate)
- (/AUCL) - Collaborator names (consortium, committee, study group)
- (/AUTH) - Author Group names (all of the above)
Each of these fields is searchable, displayable, selectable, and sortable.
A complete description of the changes to MeSH for 2009 can be viewed at www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/nd08/nd08_mesh.html.
To see additional information about MEDLINE and LMEDLINE, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets.
Enhance patent query retrieval - use terms from the IPC Thesaurus, Version 2009.01
Enhance the power of your patent searches. Use search terms from the latest version of the International Patent Classification (IPC) Thesaurus to quickly locate the information you need from the rich collection of worldwide patent databases offered by STN:

Additional information is available at IPC Reform and STN.
For additional information about the databases listed above, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets.
TOXCENTER enhanced with reloaded MEDLINE segment
The MEDLINE segment of Toxicology Center (TOXCENTER) has been updated with the 2009 edition of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).
TOXCENTER now also includes the same four author name fields that are offered in MEDLINE:
- (/AU) - Author names
- (/AUGR) - Group Author names (corporate)
- (/AUCL) - Collaborator names (consortium, committee, study group)
- (/AUTH) - Author Group names (all of the above)
Each of these fields is searchable, displayable, selectable, and sortable.
A complete description of the changes to MeSH for 2009 can be viewed at www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/nd08/nd08_mesh.html.
To see additional information about TOXCENTER, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheet.
USGENE enhanced with patent sequence location field and INPADOCDB display formats
- With the January 2009 introduction of a new search field in the USPTO Genetic Sequence Database (USGENE), you now have an easier way to identify sequences mentioned in patent claims. The new PSL (Patent Sequence Location) field provides you with sequence identity numbers. If these sequence identity numbers are described in the claims, then the corresponding claim number is provided, improving your access to this information.
- USGENE has also added four display formats from the International Patent Documentation Database (INPADOCDB). The INPADOCDB fields identify the sequence records from a USGENE sequence search that come from different U.S. publications but refer to the same INPADOC family. The INPADOCDB fields new to USGENE are FAM (AN, table of patent family information), CFAM (condensed FAM with only PI in the table), LS (AN, UPLS, legal status), and LS2 (detailed version of legal status with display header). Additional fees are charged for displaying these fields in USGENE. For price information, enter HELP COST at an arrow prompt (=>) in the database.
For additional information about USGENE, refer to the FIZ Karlsruhe web site or the STN Database Summary Sheet.
USPATFULL and USPAT2 image display and print options streamlined
The following display and print formats have been eliminated from the U.S. Patents Original Publications (USPATFULL) and the U.S. Patents Latest Publications (USPAT2) databases:
|
|
You can view image files for U.S. patents by using the ChemPort links within records to access full-text data with images at no charge.
The U.S. Patents Pre-1976 (USPATOLD) database does not offer image displays and is not affected by these changes.
The elimination of the above formats will have no effect on your current-awareness alert (SDI) profiles or saved answer sets.
For additional information about USPATFULL and USPAT2, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets.
WTEXTILES reloaded and enhanced with new search and display fields
Access the information you need quicker and more easily with several new search and display fields in the World Textiles (WTEXTILES) database.
The following new search fields offer more specific search and expand capabilities:
- Abstract (/AB)
- Corporate Name Manufacturer (/CO)
- Supplementary Term (Author keywords) (/ST)
- Trade Name (/TN)
New display fields provide additional display, select, and sort capabilities:
- Journal Title, Abbreviated (JTA)
- Journal Title, Full (JTF)
Simultaneous left and right truncation (SLART) is now available in the Basic Index (/BI), Abstract (/AB), and Title (/TI) search fields.
Author names and affiliated organizations are now indexed and displayed in the /CS search field.
The Entry Date (/ED) and Update Date (/UP) fields are now available for automatic or manual update searching. Use /ED to search on all new records in an update and /UP to search all new and revised records.
These enhancements will not affect your current-awareness alert (SDI)
profiles or saved answer sets.
For additional information about WTEXTILES, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheet.
