Search Tip: Selectively removing answers to create a more precise answer set

Have you ever wondered how to selectively remove answers from your L-number answer set?

By combining STN's browsing, tagging, and sorting options, you can create a new L-number that contains only answers of interest.  Simply follow these steps:

  1. Review the answer set by using DISPLAY BROWSE.
  2. "TAG" the answers you wish to retain.
  3. Exit DISPLAY BROWSE.
  4. Use SORT TAG to create a new answer set that includes only the "tagged" answers.
  5. DISPLAY or SAVE the new answer set.

Since this process requires you to review each record individually, it is not practical for large answer sets.  However, once you have used other refining methods to narrow your answers to a viable number, you can easily use this process to selectively tag and keep only answers of interest.

1. Review the answer set by using DISPLAY BROWSE.

Set the titles of the records as the default display by entering *TI at the colon prompt (:).

L3         169 MITRAL VALVE REPAIR? AND 2008/PY
=> D BRO
:*TI

2. "TAG" the answers you wish to retain.

Enter the number for the record you wish to display.  As you review the titles, enter TAG for those you wish to keep in the new answer set.  Continue to display and tag the titles of interest.

TI   Biventricular repair in children with complete atrioventricular
     septal defect and a small left ventricle.

For quicker review of an answer set, you can display and tag multiple records at once.  For example:

=> D BRO
:*TI
:1-169
...
:TAG 1, 3, 168

3. Exit DISPLAY BROWSE.

Once you have tagged all the records that you want to retain, type END.

:END

4. Use SORT TAG to create a new answer set that includes only the "tagged" answers.

For example, use the Entry Date (ED) as the sort field for the new L-number.  The default sort direction (ascending) need not be specified.  The answer set created by the sorting operation contains only the answers that you tagged.

=> SORT L3 TAG
ENTER SORT FIELDS AND SORT DIRECTION (?):ED
PROCESSING COMPLETED FOR L3
L4           114 SORT L3 TAG ED

5. DISPLAY or SAVE the new answer set.

=> D L4
L4   ANSWER 1 OF 114  EMBASE  COPYRIGHT (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All
